While the images allow increasing passages of time between events and the photographs that reflect on them – “made moments after the events they depict, then those made days after, then months, years and so on” – there settles in the pit of the stomach some unremitting melancholy, some unholy dread as to the brutal facticity and inhumanness of war Chinese Motorbike Spares. The work which “pictures” the memory of the events that took place, like a visual ode of remembrance, are made all the more powerful for their transcendence – of time, of death and the immediate detritus of war.
Researching her series, Dewe Mathews worked closely with academics to locate the forgotten places along the western front where these unfortunate combatants had been shot. She then travelled to each spot and set up her camera there at dawn, recording whatever could be seen a century after the executions had taken place.

The first featured a ruined castle that was blown up intentionally by the Japanese army during the Second World War. The second comprised photographs taken a decade after the atomic bomb exploded in Hiroshima. They showed the stains and flaking ceilings of the Atomic Bomb Dome, the only structure left standing at the heart of the detonation zone. The third part concerned Tokyo during the period of economic recovery: images of advertising, scrap iron, the trampled national flag and emblems of the American Forces such as Lucky Strike and Coca-Cola, all twisted together, their order shuffled again and again. Some appeared as a montage to be presented as a metaphor. I dare not say the meaning of it.

Cinematic framing involves the strategic arrangement of elements within a scene to direct the viewer’s attention and enhance the narrative. Painters have adopted this technique to create a sense of movement and story within their static compositions. By using techniques such as close-ups, wide shots, and off-center framing, artists can evoke the feeling of a film still, drawing the viewer into the scene and encouraging them to imagine the unfolding narrative.
Here, Godard fashions his film using several recreations of classical European paintings, the most famous of which is a sequence in reference to La Petite Baigneuse. Intérieur de Harem (1828) by Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres, in which a female nude in a chaste pose forms the axis around which the composition gets centered. Although nude, the figure and its depiction lack the usual sexual emphasis and instead lean towards the delicate, the sensual, and the light. The folds of the linen and the green drapes further soften the figure, lending a roundness to it and furthering the measured calmness of the painting.
The development of narrative and visual storytelling in film, particularly the use of sequential art and storyboarding, has also left a lasting impact on painting. Storyboarding, a technique used by filmmakers to plan out the visual sequence of a film, parallels the way some painters approach narrative-driven compositions. Artists like David Hockney have adopted elements of sequential art to create paintings that suggest a progression of events, much like a film.
The sense of urban isolation in Edward Hopper’s ‘Nighthawks’ infiltrates ‘Pennies from Heaven’ by Herbert Ross. The film’s lonely diner scene directly mirrors Hopper’s painting, creating a cinematic moment where life imitates art in its loneliest form.
The most bodacious example of the employment of Hopper’s frames in film is in Gustav Deutsch’s 2013 singular work Shirley: Visions of Reality, which recounts the life of a fictional actress named Shirley through thirteen paintings by Edward Hopper. There is a specific lack of narrative flow in Deutsch’s film, owing to its heavily constructed nature, but what catches the eye is the interplay of the discernible color scheme, the blocking, and the lighting (that is peculiar to Hopper), creating a cinematic space where the characters on screen remain ensconced in an embrace of emptiness, wrapped in “the loneliness thing.”
